Who are the Urchins?

Sarah Jost is a writer/editor/Urchin who can’t sit still. After moving from Chicago to LA to London to Vermont, she’s about to embark on a global adventure of Urchin proportions (big plans, small budget) beginning in New Zealand. With a penchant for unbridled joy, tiny versions of anything, and city parks, Sarah is just your average 25 year old environmental, social, and political activist vegan feminist vagabond poet.

Geo Ong is a person from Los Angeles. The soles of his shoes are worn, partly because he loves travelling by foot and also because he buys most of his shoes secondhand, or should we say secondfoot. He’s worked as a bookseller in London, a bookseller in Los Angeles, and he is now a bookseller in Brooklyn. His hair comprises 48.2% of his entire bodily weight. He is also good at shooting pool but inconsistent to say the least, so sometimes he will win and sometimes he won’t. Such is life.

Margaret Hedderman keeps trying to leave the mountains, but just can’t seem to hang up the hiking boots, stash the snowboard, or throw away the climbing chalk. Even though she’s practically a travelling gear store unto herself, she makes pilgrimages to every gear shop in every town she happens upon. More afraid of deadlines than bears, Margaret has been known to finish writing projects in a tent by the light of a Black Diamond torch. (That’s partially true, Margaret is actually very afraid of bears ripping her face off.) She is currently a freelance writer in Colorado.

    Hey fellow Urchins,

Found your site when I was searching for anything on my own….I am an expat from Toronto living in Sydney. About a year ago I started up a secondhand bookshop in a pocket of Sydney filled with creatives and the environmentally and socially conscious. My shop is called Urchin Books. Our ethos is similar to your own. I guess its collective consciousness eh? Anyway, our website is in process (www.urchinbooks.com and until then you can check us out, if you’re interested, by googling urchin books marrickville). I like your blog and will keep reading and sharing it with other Urchins!
    Power to the Urchin-
    Cheers,
    Rachel

Rachel, this boggles my mind! What are the chances? I’m so happy you found us. I want to travel to Sydney right away to visit your bookstore. I promise you that will happen. It sounds absolutely wonderful. Please let us know when your website is up and running. Power to the Urchin, indeed. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. -Geo

Liked your article on slow food very much. Colorado Springs sounds like a place to visit for the Slow Food movement. Check out Minneapolis. I’s a serious foodie/slow food town.

Really? I never would have thought, but that’s good to know! I should be travelling through that area in the near future, so I will be sure to stop now that I know! – Margaret

  13. Hello Urchins,

thank you for your interest in our straw bale hotel.
As you can see, construction works are still on, but we think we’ll be ready for opening in October this year.

We wish you a Happy New Year and a lot of visits on your great blog.
Maybe your worn out shoes will get you here one day…

    Greetings from Switzerland

    Louis

Thanks for following my humble offering.

Is there any chance you guys have more raw US RandB rock up your sleeves. Feel the need for something new, that’s all.

    Great blog, by the way.

Thank you! We’re glad to have you as a reader. A far as good rock and blues goes, let me do some thinking. This sounds like a potential post for me! – M.

Cheers M, it was such a good call to introduce The Black Keys. They now have a sizeable fan base on Exmoor in England. Look us up, we are bleak and harbour secrets never to be told. Unlike almost anywhere else in the UK we have our own local radio station called 10 Radio which is run by amateurs and people with absolutely no talent for broadcasting whatsoever which is probably why it’s so brilliant. Check it out on line if you want to.

        Peace and love,

        RR

  15. “His hair comprises 48.2% of his entire bodily weight” actually made me laugh… ;)
Great way to introduce someone… :)

Loved your artucke, ‘Hippies vs. Hipsters’. Very insightful. I just found out about your blog today and will probably be lurking around for hours to come, instead of studying for finals. But I can assure you that I will be here every day this summer before my freshman year because I have no life. Keep it up. (:

Not sure if you accept the virtual awards… but I’ve done it anyway! I have nominated you for a Very Inspiring Blogger award. I think your writing is great, and you can view my post where I nominated you, and see the “rules” on how to keep the awards going! Thanks for keeping me entertained! http://moorewithmadi.wordpress.com/2012/11/02/an-award-for-me/
